Training to Become a Physical Therapist

Have you always wanted to find a way to help people but being a nurse or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is just not right for you? A job as a physical therapist might just be the right path for you. Physical therapists work with people to strengthen weak or injured muscles, improve mobility, and reduce stress and pain. Therapy can include deep tissue massage, ultrasound treatments, or exercise.

To work as a physical therapist you will need at least a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy, although many positions require you to have a Master’s degree. If you know you want to possibly work in this field, you can begin preparing for your future schooling by taking higher level science courses while still in high school. As you study to be a physical therapist you will be taking several science courses including biology, chemistry, and physics. You will need to have a good understanding of human anatomy and physiology as well.

It will be necessary for you to have good interpersonal skills. You may find yourself in a position that you have to convince a patient to work through the exercises or treatments that he is required to do to heal. You will also be faced with convincing patients and family of the need for long-term physical therapy treatments.

Physical therapy is a highly competitive career. Therefore, you will need to maintain a high grade point average throughout your schooling. You may have better success in securing a position where you want to work if you can get your internship there while you are still in school.

Once you have completed your schooling you will need to pass your state’s licensing exam. It is advisable to check your state’s requirements long before you go to take the exam so that you can be prepared.
