Awareness is starting to grow around the possibility of head injury in many organized sports. It is important to know the signs of this traumatic injury to your head known as a concussion. A concussion is an impact injury caused to your brain due to sudden jarring either from hitting or being hit by another object. This can happen at any time but is often found during sports or in car accidents.
Head injuries are no laughing matter and if a person goes unconscious due to an impact, it is most wise to visit a doctor. A concussion can cause severe brain damage without treatment, so it is better to check it out that to hope that it goes away. It isn’t a bad thing to go to a doctor to find out there is nothing to be concerned about.
There are many signs to a possible concussion and if you expect one or more of them seek treatment. One easy symptom is unconsciousness, but sometimes the person does not loose consciousness. A person may become drowsy, or have difficulty walking straight. Sometimes there is an inconsistency between the size of the pupils in the eyes or a person may repeatedly vomit. At times a person may seem confused or may not wake up, remaining unconscious. If you suspect, get treatment, it is as simple as that.
Treatment may be limited for a mild concussion but it is still advised to get the opinion of a health care professional about when to return to playing sports. Once a concussion, can lead to serious problems if another concussion occurs soon after the first. For more serious concussions there may be need for hospitalization, especially if there is internal bleeding of the brain.
It’s best to take care and avoid concussions, but if an impact injury occurs watch your friends and teammates they may not know to ask for help.
